Youths aim to repeat last years Cork heroics

Wexford Youths FC take on Cork City at Turners Cross this Bank Holiday Monday in the 2nd Round of the EA Sports Cup. The Youths will be aiming to reproduce last year’s heroics when they knocked out the Leesiders at the semi-final stages, thanks to a Paul Murphy goal.

Mick Wallace’s troops recorded an impressive 3-0 League win over Kildare County at Station Road, thanks to goals from David Breen, Gavin Doyle and Richie Fitzgerald. The Youths are still in fifth place, three points behind Shelbourne, However Shel’s have a game in hand. This just highlights the form that the Youths are in, although their opponents are in a rich vain of form as well.

Paul Doolin has transformed City since he took over at the start of the season. Doolin had his critics when he first arrived in the rebel county, but their League position doesn’t lie. City sit second in the Premier League, just three points behind Bohemians.

All in all, this promises to be an exciting game of football as both sides love nothing more than to attack the opposition.
Wallace has a lot of injuries at the moment, but they don’t seem to be affecting his team momentum. Marty Kelly, Jimmy Keohane and Gareth McCurtain are still out injured and this game seems to have come too early for them.

As Wexford did in the previous round against Limerick, they will offer some of the fringe players the chance to come in and mount a place in the starting line up. This will mean that Paul Rossiter, Shane Dempsey and Pa Doyle will be hoping to start come Monday evening.

Speaking to Wallace’s right hand man Noel O’Connor, he suggested that this will be a game that will help some of the younger players to gain experience.

“We hope to bring in some of the fringe players in order to help freshen up the side and also as we may have one eye on the Monaghan United game on Friday night” said O’Connor.
“Our reward for a hard fought victory over Limerick in the previous round is a glamour tie against one of Ireland’s best sides and a lot of our guys can gain valuable experience from a fixture like this.
This will be a tough game and we’re really looking forward to it” O’Connor said.
