Doyle relishing Wexford return
Wolves star happy to help out mentor Wallace
Republic of Ireland striker Kevin Doyle is looking forward to lining out against his former underage coach and mentor Mick Wallace’s Wexford Youths FC side next Monday, when the Wolves striker returns home to Wexford for the Ferrycarrig Park clash.
Monday’s game, which tickets are still available for on www.tickets.ie, was included as part of the transfer deal that saw Doyle move from Reading to Wolves earlier this summer to become the club’s record signing, and the Wexford born striker is delighted that the game will go some way to repaying the faith and support that Mick Wallace showed in him over the years.
“I was delighted that Wolves agreed to the fixture when agreeing the transfer as Wexford Youths and Mick (Wallace) deserve any help they can get as Mick was a huge influence on my career and development,” Doyle said. “It’s not always possible to give something back to the people who have helped you succeed, so this game will at least go someway towards that.
“What Mick has done over the years with Wexford underage teams and what he has done now with the Youths League of Ireland team is phenomenal. He lives and breathes football and the people of Wexford are lucky to have such a dedicated person who has brought League of Ireland football to the county, as to be honest, if it wasn’t for Mick it may never have happened.”
As well as commending Wallace’s efforts at underage level iand also bringing senior League of Ireland football to Wexford, Doyle hopes that the thousands of fans expected at Ferrycarrig Park on Monday will return to the ground for the club’s next League of Ireland game.
“The League is not in a strong position at the moment, which is sad to see, as my time there played a huge role in my progress. If a game like this can help to build the profile of the Wexford Youths and raise some money for the club then that’s good, but it would be great if people supported their local club week in week out and hopefully a lot of the people at Ferrycarrig Park on Monday will be at the club’s next League of Ireland game,” the former St Pats and Cork City player said.
“It’s going to be a special night playing for Wolves in Wexford against a lot of lads I would have played with and against at underage level. Ferrycarrig Park is only a few miles away from my family home and I’m sure there will be a huge crowd at the game, so I’m really looking forward to it.”
