Youths seriously depleted for Longford part three
Wexford Youths FC travel again to Flancare Park to face an improving Longford Town outfit on Saturday night in the League. Mick Wallace’s side crashed out of the FAI Ford Cup on Wednesday with a 3-2 defeat after extra-time. Saturday night will be the third time these sides face each other in under and week and Wexford will be looking to set the record straight after a draw and a defeat in the last two meetings. However, Wallace will have to face Gareth Cronin’s men without top goal scorer Gavin Doyle and team Captain Conor Sinnott who are unavailable as they are on holidays.
Paul Malone who scored on Wednesday night will also be unavailable after he picked up another booking and therefore will serve a suspension. Add these three influential players to Wallace’s injury list and its clear to see that he may have a selection crisis come Saturday night. Wallace may have to dip into the Youth squad with players such as Martin Kehoe, Tiernan Rossiter and Shane Sinnott being drafted into the first team.
After the defeat on Wednesday night Wallace said; “We’re hugely disappointed, we always like a good run in the cup competitions and it just didn’t happen. I felt we started the game well, dominating the first 15 minutes, and then Longford controlled the rest of the first half. We controlled the entire second half, but just couldn’t finish them off and they punished us in extra-time”.
“It’s always very difficult playing against the same team three times in the space of a week, but it has to be done. Both sides have a good idea of each other now and it’s going to be extremely difficult for us on Saturday night” Wallace said.
“Gareth Cronin has done a great job with Longford so far and even though it’s early days yet, I feel that as the season progresses Longford will be one of the toughest sides in the League and their League position will drastically improve” stated Wallace.
