Youths aim to stun Students
Mick Wallace’s Wexford Youths welcome UCD to Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night in a game the Youths must win in order to keep in touch with the top four. After last weeks disappointing performance against Limerick, Wallace will be hoping his side can bounce back from the defeat. The Youths failed to get out of second gear in the first half and even though they had the better of possession in the second half, they rarely threatened Pat Scully’s team. A home fixture is ideal for the Youths to bounce back, but Pete Mahon’s high flying side won’t be a walk in the park. However, the Youths did get the better of the Students back in April when they beat them 1-0 at the UCD Bowl, all thanks to a Liam O’Loughlin goal.
On the injury front David Miller has been ruled out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury. Packie Holden is still unavailable and faces a couple more weeks on the sidelines. However, there is good news with the availability of Conor Sinnott and Johnny Flynn O’Connor who have recently served suspensions.
Wallace was downbeat after the Limerick defeat after he saw his side brushed aside by the Shannonsiders and he’ll know that this game is a must win in order to keep the dream of a top four finish alive.
“We were outplayed against Limerick last Friday we know that, but we’re still learning all the time. We know that the UCD game is a tough fixture, but it is clearly a must win if we want to keep pressure on the top four. Otherwise it’s a battle for fifth place for the rest of the season” declared Wallace.
“Monaghan, Finn Harps and obviously Limerick are all battling for our position so we’re under no illusions about how difficult the final run in to the season will be” stated Wallace.
In other news the Wexford Youths U20 season starts this Saturday with a local derby kicking off at 2pm. The Youths travel to the RSC to face Waterford United in what promises to be a gripping opener. The U20’s were extremely unlucky last year when they crashed out to Carlow on goal difference.
Wallace went on to say that; “The players that don’t play against UCD on Friday will be involved against Waterford on Saturday. We have to be careful with the U20’s side, but more often than not the Senior side can end up interfering and the team can become unstable”.
